CAYA Update 9/26

Over the next few weeks your players will be receiving mid-season feedback from their coach. This will come in the form of a document outlining three clearly defined areas for improvement. The goal of this feedback is to help your son/daughter focus their efforts and attention in and outside of practice on a few key areas that will help them progress.

Article to read this week is once again from Tennessee SC and is titled Mastering the Mundane Separates the "Good" from the "Great". Great little read on how we can make all the little things we do add up.

Two video links for the players:
Match of the Day - 9/20 - a link to last Saturday's EPL game highlights and analysis
Skill Skool - Raheem Sterling - young Liverpool superstar as an apprentice player

Two big derby games this Saturday. The Merseyside derby kicks off the weekend as Liverpool host Everton. Only Stanley park separates the Red and Blue half of the city of Liverpool. Both team's have had a stop start season and will be going all out to get one over their nearest rivals.

Saturday lunchtime sees the North London derby between 4th placed Arsenal and 11th placed Tottenham at the Emirates. This game should be a good one too. A few years ago this game provided an astonishing eight goal thriller. Click here to see highlights

Remembering Laura
It has been a tough week for the CASL family with the tragic passing of Laura Yost. You should have received an email from the club earlier about the club's efforts to support the family during this difficult period. Just in case you didn't below is the link to purchase your support Laura Yost t-shirt. Please note that 100% of the money for each shirt sold will go directly to the family.

Fantastic Week of Soccer on the Cards!

What a week of soccer we have on our hands! The UEFA Champions League returns to our TV screens and there are a whole host of great games to be seen in the area this weekend. The weather forecast looks beautiful too.

Building Relationships:
As a club we are trying to build relationships between both our older and younger players. We would love to have our CAYA players, teams and families come out and support our older teams this weekend. Please come out to the fields wearing your orange jerseys and cheer on our ECNL ladies or USDA boys as they compete at the highest levels of youth soccer at WRAL this weekend. We plan to have our older players come out and support our CAYA players this fall.

The game at this age is a lot about fun and as coaches we are focused on player development. As parents I am sure you hear all the time about how this was fun, that wasn't fun, etc. and you are constantly trying to keep them entertained and pursuing something they enjoy. The following article is a great little read on the ups and downs that your child may experience while playing sports.

The real meaning of "I'm not having fun anymore"

CAYA Update 9/12

I hope this email finds you well. We are due some wet weather over the next few days so please be checking your email and be sure to check the website or weather hotline before heading to the fields.

All families should have received the CAYA program PowerPoint and read through it, if not please reach out to your coach or team manager. One of the key things within the information delivered were the guidelines for parent sideline behavior. It is important that we are all reading from the same hymn sheet and doing all we can to lead by example for these young boys and girls. In doing so the environment we create will be one that will allow the players to express themselves and enjoy the game to its fullest.

It is a players game and we want them to PLAY and make their own decisions in the game. With that said we also do not expect it to be like a library. We want you, as proud parents to support and encourage your child and their teammates, especially when good soccer takes place. For instance, the team connects passes out of pressure and builds a good attack, your goalie makes an amazing save, an individual shows a bit of magic on the ball and beats two players before passing to a teammate. These are all things as coaches we love to see from our players and your appreciation and recognition for such occurrences will only help encourage our players further. Things we want to stay away from are yelling verbs like "GO!", "Shoot!", "PASS". This is coaching and directing play. It only serves to confuse players and often leads to the individual panicking and making an incorrect decision. We would prefer that the support or encouragement given comes after the play and once the players have made their decision, whether good or bad. Other things we need to avoid are applauding yellow cards. These kids are 8-10 years old and we should NOT be celebrating a young person being reprimanded.

We hope this provides a better idea of how we can create the best possible environment for the players to develop and more importantly ENJOY the beautiful game!

Here is a great little article on how we can show mental toughness relating to the game      http://www.nscaa.com/news/2014/08/tsc--mental-toughness

*The pick of the games this weekend has to be Arsenal vs Manchester City. However, there is also the top of the table clash between title favorites Chelsea and surprise package Swansea City. At the other end of the spectrum Crystal Palace entertain Burnley. As both teams go in search of their first win of the season that will hopefully propel them up the table and out of the bottom 3.

Thank you for your support of the CAYA program and as always if you have any questions please get in touch with your regional director.
